Nya Kwiawon Taryor, Sr. has written and published many books, and articles. In addition, he has written Book Reviews, written many Chapters in other colleagues’ books, written Introductions, Forewords and Publisher’s Notes to many of the books he has published for different people along the years from 1967 to the present. He has attended many scholarly conferences and presented many scholarly papers that have been published. Only a few of the essential ones we will highlight, not necessarily in any chronological order. Since the list may be a long one, for space and time, we will list no more than 15 of his works out of his many intellectual properties we have on hand. Blurbs about these books will not be included because if all the blurbs were included, much space will be taken.
1. Reasons Why “Mano” or Mah Students Drop out of School, (1969). [A College Research Paper in Dr. John Gay’s class at Cuttington that the Board of Global Ministries of the Methodist Church, Women Division of Christian Service developed into a Film strip to train missionaries about African/Liberian education system, popularized by Dr. Anthony Fadley in his Ministries in Liberia in the early 1970s] (Characters acting in the film strip were Mary Jackson, Joseph Dahn, myself (Nya K. Taryor, Sr.) and a few others].
2. (Editor) Justice, Justice, A Cry of my People: (1985) Speeches, Papers, and Important Documents by some of the Makers of the Liberian Revolution (yet to come) In the Movement for Justice In Africa: [MOJA-LIBERA]. This narrative addresses the issues of social, political, economic, legal, educational and civil rights in Liberia in the 1970s and 80s; a struggle for RICE AND RIGHTS in Liberia in the 1970s and 80s. Published in Chicago by Strugglers’ Community Press.
3. Impact of the African Tradition on African Christianity. (1984 & 1985). Chicago: Strugglers’ Community Press. The book was used as a textbook in many schools, universities and seminaries for studying the History and Practice of Christianity in Africa. 4 Religions and Politics in Liberia. (1989). Hamilton College, Clinton, New York. Dr Taryor, Sr. wrote this book when he was the Coordinator of Chaplaincy and Lecturer in Religion at Hamilton College. The work was officially published in Germany by the Liberian Forum, a Liberian Working Group Edited by Robert Kappel and Warner Korte. Many scholars have quoted segments of this work in their own publications.
5. LIBERIA Facing Mount Nimba: A Documentary History of the United Nimba Citizens’ Council. (UNICCO). (1991). Chicago. Strugglers’ Community Press. This is a book that was born out of the Research Dr. Nya K. Taryor, Sr. conducted on a Liberia Regional Association of the people of Nimba County in Liberia living in the USA when he was teaching and Coordinating the College Chaplaincy at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. This book can be found in many libraries around the world and in many university libraries in the USA. 6. A Kee Zi: Constitutions and By-Laws of UNICCO National and Local Chapters. (1991) Chicago. Strugglers’ Community Press. In addition to the UNICCO Revised Constitution, the local constitution for the following chapters are included in this book: Chicago, Georgia, Minnesota, New Jersey and New York. After this book of constitution was published, Dr. Taryor helped to edit and publish almost all the local UNICCO Chapters, constitutions. He also was involved in the editing and publishing of all subsequent National UNICCO Constitution.
7. Mahwe Mindan Kii: Learning to Speak the Mah Language of Nimba County, Liberia, West Africa. Mahwe 101 First Primer. (First Printing 2010 and most recent Seventh printing 2020). Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Kiiton Press. In this book, Dr. Nya Taryor, Sr. gives the readers some basic tools needed to read and understand the Mah Language. He was born and raised in that ethnicity. You will learn the unique Mah Alphabets and their phonetic constructions. Simple grammar and words for vocabulary building can be found on every page. There are sentence constructions to help you learn to speak, write and have basic conversation. There are color photographs and illustrations to help the reader associate concepts with live images. This is a very unique and excellent book you will enjoy and keep in your book collections.
8. No Room In The Bethlehem Inn: A Christmas Drama about the birth of Christ. (1987). Chicago, Illinois, Strugglers’ Community Press. This book of Drama can be found in the Library of Congress in Washington DC. It can also be found in the Buffalo and Erie County Library in Buffalo, New York. You can also find a copy in Calvin University, Hekmen Library, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
9. “Religion in Modern Liberia”, presented at the thirty-first annual meeting of the African Studies Association in Chicago, Illinois on October 28 to 31st,1988. A copy of this paper can be found at UEA Test Instance, Sandbox for University for East Anglia, Norfolk United Kingdom and Norwich, UK.
10. Dr. Taryor has written many articles and book reviews published in many major publications. This particular book review was published in the Liberian Studies Journal volume XVI 1991 Number 2, The book under review Revelations of the Religions was written by Rev. J. Samuels Reeves. You can find this book review on Pages 97 to 101 in the Liberian Studies Journal quoted above.
11. The following 3 books contain chapters written by Dr. Nya Kwiawon Taryor, Sr. (1) Editor: Jane Heaton. Journey of Struggle, Journey in Hope. (1983). New York: Friendship Press. The chapter on” Theological Education in Africa for What?” was written by L. Nya Kwiawon Taryor.
12. (2) Julio De Santa Ana (1981). Towards a Church of the Poor: The Work of an Ecumenical Group on the Church and the Poor. Orbis Book: Maryknoll. The chapter written by Taryor is: Chapter VIII “How the Poor Challenge the Church” pages 97-113. This work was published under the auspices of the World Council of Churches located in Geneva, Switzerland.
13. (3) Elizabeth Conde-Frazier [Editor] (2001). Multicultural Models Religious Education.Claremont, California: Third World Literature Publishing House. The chapter written by Dr. Taryor is: “A Multicultural Model for Religious Education in the African Context.” Pages 172 – 206. This work is a compilation of works written by the Ph. D and D. Min. students studying Religious Education at the Claremont School of Theology in 2001. Taryor had already completed his Doctor of Ministry degree in 1976 and now studying for his second doctorate degree (Ph. D degree).
14. Winifred J. Harley. A Third of a Century with George Way Harley in Liberia. Originally published in 1973 by the Liberian Studies Association in the Americas, Inc. Newark, Delaware. It was one of the Liberian Studies Monograph Series Number 2. Dr. Nya Kwiawon Taryor, Re-edited and republished the work in 2018 under the same title. Published by Kiiton Press. He republished the book because the book was now out of print after almost 50 years. The book helps us to understand when and how Ganta Mission was established, especially as we approach the 100th year of the founding of Ganta Mission since 1926. The year 2026 will be the year of the Centennial Celebration of Ganta Mission.
15. The other significant literary contribution by Taryor is his composition of the Ganta Mission School, School Ode, “We Hail Thee Ganta Mission” in 2006 and his composition of another Ganta Mission song of Gratitude in 2011. “Gratitude, Challenge and a Call to Christian Service.”
