THE ROLE OF A QUEEN IN OUR ORGANIZATION
Most people have asked me about the role of our Queen, especially when the organization does not have a King. Even though our constitution is silent about the role of our Queen, the prevailing belief amongst us is that the Queen's role is basically ceremonial. She exercises no internal or external power within the Association, but she is held with very high esteem. We look forward to electing a new queen at the beginning of every administration because the event at the election of our queen helps us to raise funds for our Association. Several ladies, young or old, contest during the banquet night of the conference. Members and non-members are asked to finance the lady of their choice to be the queen for the new administration. The lady that wins is the one with the most amount of money in her basket at the end of the contest. She is crowned by the past or previous Queens. She is also awarded with a Banner marked "QUEEN OF GUMMSAA with the Year of the election on the Banner. I am proposing to the constitution committee which will be appointed this year, to study the issue and come up with some ceremonial roles or functions that the queen can perform, such as giving opening welcome remarks at the beginning of every Annual Convention or Reunion Conference. The other suggestion will be for her to chair a certain committee to be formulated by the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee. By all means, there should be a function for the Queen in addition to playing only a fundraising role.
